So, there's lots of moving in and moving out. Glass half empty - all your friends eventually move :( Glass half full - but there are always new ones moving in! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuOcIXybGHFuNvpkctRRW6VfYWNoT_bXGKFaIrgTC9s-7Zuv2MfLriIeZkhbJZ7Clda1s_0Ht6098_Tj1IEvmz3zuWDho82q6bz4V2Kwkd4kza8ijnx4Mx4TrbeAs6CppXW7urm1_oLM/s1600/IMG_3625.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjuOcIXybGHFuNvpkctRRW6VfYWNoT_bXGKFaIrgTC9s-7Zuv2MfLriIeZkhbJZ7Clda1s_0Ht6098_Tj1IEvmz3zuWDho82q6bz4V2Kwkd4kza8ijnx4Mx4TrbeAs6CppXW7urm1_oLM/s1600/IMG_3625.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
One of my <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/">favorite friends ever</a> moved away last year. I had every intention of making her a quilt before she left, but I was a little busy growing a baby. And trying my best <strike>not to kill</strike> to help my older three children survive the summer with a terminally pregnant mom. It was a long summer. With a super cute reward at the end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqqpWYZm4OAqE_zyl7vEj9GI2nLHVd3W73WA3-i47TqAJrV0XQ9NqbDRNNJawa5YOJn6jJ1yH2rSSK3d1uBj9xXJ4s-ychkY0_e6dCR9yLMEnmjKOB-vQJMJ2bdVyd4Avn9vjksBWNjO8/s1600/IMG_7290.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqqpWYZm4OAqE_zyl7vEj9GI2nLHVd3W73WA3-i47TqAJrV0XQ9NqbDRNNJawa5YOJn6jJ1yH2rSSK3d1uBj9xXJ4s-ychkY0_e6dCR9yLMEnmjKOB-vQJMJ2bdVyd4Avn9vjksBWNjO8/s1600/IMG_7290.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Anyway, I got a little behind on my sewing and didn't finish it until earlier this year. Amy came down to visit last month, so I got to give it to her in person.<br />
<br />
Last year, before Amy moved, we made a baby quilt together for a mutual friend. We pretty much copied <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/hil_c/8712276124/in/faves-41737995@N03/">this quilt</a>. Bonnie and Camille's Ruby line plus aqua = awesomeness. Plus, the baby's name was Ruby. Of all the baby quilts we have made together (at least fourteen!), this was Amy's favorite one. <br />
<br />
So when it came time to make Amy's quilt, I remade it one more time, this time using half of a layer cake (left over from my <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2013/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-fall-2013.html">daughter's quilt</a>). And once again, Ruby plus aqua = awesomeness. Seriously.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibeex1F9fETpwjI5tZviiWu2LegI5k28ILW0DS_H0xUZv_och0TwF0vW_ODKkhpBRJPp1Inw8ZnvVxBnY8m3_OI0YyazvZza2zcnisuplKMQMpkQQyUeA6uI-BRNwxx2PLzxlSy4UJHD8/s1600/IMG_0843.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibeex1F9fETpwjI5tZviiWu2LegI5k28ILW0DS_H0xUZv_och0TwF0vW_ODKkhpBRJPp1Inw8ZnvVxBnY8m3_OI0YyazvZza2zcnisuplKMQMpkQQyUeA6uI-BRNwxx2PLzxlSy4UJHD8/s1600/IMG_0843.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
For the quilting, I mixed things up a little (for me, anyway). I went with a traditional 1/4" on either side of the seams in the pieced portions. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPIPH7Fd_ieOBnqZskVX0HiEPDoaVbHYDZuy_hhnSyFMFrF3BfqjdT0cafRmQqSgvOU083mhScdgc_MC2UIyOrb2_yvI_unans0uMaFQ6xDb3UDC5-zzYGVpbY-4Kvy8zYlpSct0zzv9o/s1600/IMG_0831.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPIPH7Fd_ieOBnqZskVX0HiEPDoaVbHYDZuy_hhnSyFMFrF3BfqjdT0cafRmQqSgvOU083mhScdgc_MC2UIyOrb2_yvI_unans0uMaFQ6xDb3UDC5-zzYGVpbY-4Kvy8zYlpSct0zzv9o/s1600/IMG_0831.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
But on the aqua sections, I quilted an orange peel design. I love how it turned out!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVcqTMffmVsv_eIMFsdhPuy6juc6DQ6xQyfoX8MWNI2ft9cQr7-xJLocoyzXY0jGavywUaVG-GpEXgn_p7V3Nlp4pub7FgwGa72ZaWb7QcM6K3t20LDWyVC90Qa3x79qRWfyi-vLd3NRY/s1600/IMG_0832.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVcqTMffmVsv_eIMFsdhPuy6juc6DQ6xQyfoX8MWNI2ft9cQr7-xJLocoyzXY0jGavywUaVG-GpEXgn_p7V3Nlp4pub7FgwGa72ZaWb7QcM6K3t20LDWyVC90Qa3x79qRWfyi-vLd3NRY/s1600/IMG_0832.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
For the backing, I used two of my favorite prints from the line, with a pieced portion using extra pieces from the front. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3nA2swSwcGfajRGLfEl_QIN-bgbsfuUoKltZCbjBrynyD4t4g5S0up62O_zAdWu_qv559u_ulw7e7qG91bVQHkD13BiIjkXO6nvlvo4z6HjZNPeP5ELgpmAtUB5B4_pviYg4estojWbg/s1600/IMG_0855.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3nA2swSwcGfajRGLfEl_QIN-bgbsfuUoKltZCbjBrynyD4t4g5S0up62O_zAdWu_qv559u_ulw7e7qG91bVQHkD13BiIjkXO6nvlvo4z6HjZNPeP5ELgpmAtUB5B4_pviYg4estojWbg/s1600/IMG_0855.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Have I mentioned how much I love Ruby???<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIT9fh1VAAxj8mdweUOZes02VvaUSoN26kreWNWZZuctUokWY_80nPxFp_gcJ-7nrzzmYUQGcKbJHx5IzKhJ799W7Zz-REMgO477meZ9bysSHV91w787rj8LLYlXBUztqSr-sZUAlsqSE/s1600/IMG_0858.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIT9fh1VAAxj8mdweUOZes02VvaUSoN26kreWNWZZuctUokWY_80nPxFp_gcJ-7nrzzmYUQGcKbJHx5IzKhJ799W7Zz-REMgO477meZ9bysSHV91w787rj8LLYlXBUztqSr-sZUAlsqSE/s1600/IMG_0858.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
You can't go wrong with a good sundae scallop for the binding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3H0LIfNsgU2o6X_XkAlGm_xkV0nJMtpMtmc4YldRFpiNk9sfmYtM3lOmrBATOOhtxNRTrXsQPSBjpKXrz5atmrcFhpLZncWJtZHvMtiqE3Fe7GwQ_K0dA0QuFlkXd5u3DOZPGAWE09qM/s1600/IMG_0865.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3H0LIfNsgU2o6X_XkAlGm_xkV0nJMtpMtmc4YldRFpiNk9sfmYtM3lOmrBATOOhtxNRTrXsQPSBjpKXrz5atmrcFhpLZncWJtZHvMtiqE3Fe7GwQ_K0dA0QuFlkXd5u3DOZPGAWE09qM/s1600/IMG_0865.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Everything about this quilt makes me happy - the recipient, the fabric, the simple layout that does such a great job of showing off the fabric, you get the idea. Now I just need to make myself a quilt with all the Ruby I've <strike>hoarded</strike> stashed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As I've <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2011/07/haylees-quilt.html">mentioned before</a>, we live in a military town. While this gives us opportunities to meet lots of new people and make a number of good friends, this also means that those new people and good friends all eventually move. Summer, the moving season, can be rough that way.<br />
<br />
This year, three of our closest friends and their families are moving. It's a doozy of a year. So, my sewing machine has been busy making them a little something to let them know just how much they meant to us. <br />
<br />
First up is Teri. We used to live down the street from each other and worked together for two years in our church's youth Sunday School program (Primary). She also has four kids, and she and her family have been such good friends to us while they've been here. A few years ago, we co-hosted a baby shower for another friend, and I pulled some fabric in the chosen colors to help with decorations. She loved the combination, so when it was time to start her quilt, I knew where to go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-NMRR4BRRHDtDPGG3PQ9xvS4MHEtODXQOWGGJU7gdlkU0FLqQPx4PqX7_0T4QPhB9uQQOtc84oGGiTITDMnRQvAJcNzt5WfyR-4MKxFA8j2R779u-aUFRAjfchq3Mx0ZDhnkJf1faROM/s1600/IMG_7309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-NMRR4BRRHDtDPGG3PQ9xvS4MHEtODXQOWGGJU7gdlkU0FLqQPx4PqX7_0T4QPhB9uQQOtc84oGGiTITDMnRQvAJcNzt5WfyR-4MKxFA8j2R779u-aUFRAjfchq3Mx0ZDhnkJf1faROM/s1600/IMG_7309.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The pattern is by Megan at Canoe Ridge Creations, called <a href="http://www.canoeridgecreations.com/2013/08/chevron-and-on-finished-quilt.html">Chevron and On</a>. It was super simple, but a great way to show off some favorite fabrics and some fun, spunky colors. Just like Teri :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxAg2d3PCyVSu6xf7oLFTpCDq7St95mARnuUspGrY4J4F0pBeTpOVUDN5cCnU6y8xMAVsuGiksjCAAPiNM3Xrj8Bmo-LcqgVlfdhiwftRQKsGod4MWf2-yEQom4AAQ40ircjliPgMU2hY/s1600/IMG_0878.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxAg2d3PCyVSu6xf7oLFTpCDq7St95mARnuUspGrY4J4F0pBeTpOVUDN5cCnU6y8xMAVsuGiksjCAAPiNM3Xrj8Bmo-LcqgVlfdhiwftRQKsGod4MWf2-yEQom4AAQ40ircjliPgMU2hY/s1600/IMG_0878.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
And oh, are there some favorite fabrics. Kate Spain's Central Park and Verna, Bonnie and Camille's Ruby and Happy Go Lucky, Amy Butler's Lark, lots of good Riley Blake polka dots and chevrons, V and Co's Simply Color and Simply Style, Lizzie House's Red Letter Day and Happy Pilgrim, and even some Neptune. I'm smiling just thinking about it all :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimaTnR6nxAU1eWOxe2_VeL7hQaHqiL2vMm2XsA9j1azpbmmUv19HqLK6XoAvy0fpFJc25-e7VjR4YOol0Bi1UKbJJB-NQC7ctsS4P762owzs7kPvvtxpL9vOftxTgVmWL23o18Dxt1ntk/s1600/IMG_0883.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimaTnR6nxAU1eWOxe2_VeL7hQaHqiL2vMm2XsA9j1azpbmmUv19HqLK6XoAvy0fpFJc25-e7VjR4YOol0Bi1UKbJJB-NQC7ctsS4P762owzs7kPvvtxpL9vOftxTgVmWL23o18Dxt1ntk/s1600/IMG_0883.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I kept the quilting simple - just 1/4" on either side of the diagonal seam lines. Not only did I like the simplicity of it, but I also discovered her movers were coming a full month earlier than I had been thinking, so time was not my friend.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvK0DywIzXZEjH_wf2ePd_RTaFQfUvQHsMh2378mACGDVdKxQOpcFkOCANKxJ_LQujFfo11f_7h65lRJXim93ee7qcFY4fF6kYbEPyAM2bGjQZJXogZ_wP5SSoWBQmw7Ebv1HJW-jlxU/s1600/IMG_0889.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUvK0DywIzXZEjH_wf2ePd_RTaFQfUvQHsMh2378mACGDVdKxQOpcFkOCANKxJ_LQujFfo11f_7h65lRJXim93ee7qcFY4fF6kYbEPyAM2bGjQZJXogZ_wP5SSoWBQmw7Ebv1HJW-jlxU/s1600/IMG_0889.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Some Happy Pilgrim stripes to bind it off - stripes make for such great bindings!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE5Zj8fDzESVLJEWKhDOcrZVZwZy7rxazIR-qY9tgplDxByxLrd96UTkY2XgrWp-fRQZPG62S5RFozda9RgwLxgTqG6T0_mkWBfd8SWHmAjqJ4zzNFuQ9Obe5PQ1yJxW5H494z3lKnDEs/s1600/IMG_0877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE5Zj8fDzESVLJEWKhDOcrZVZwZy7rxazIR-qY9tgplDxByxLrd96UTkY2XgrWp-fRQZPG62S5RFozda9RgwLxgTqG6T0_mkWBfd8SWHmAjqJ4zzNFuQ9Obe5PQ1yJxW5H494z3lKnDEs/s1600/IMG_0877.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
Later this summer, this quilt (and Teri and her family) will be setting off for lots of new adventures in Singapore. And while I'll miss Teri a lot, at least a little piece of me will be coming along for it all.<br />
<br />
Now go see all the other lovely quilts, and thanks for stopping by!

I love the
opportunity to see so many other lovely quilts out there in Blogland,
all in one place. It *almost* makes up for seeing all the lovely new
fabric at Quilt Market. Almost ;)<br />
<br />
Earlier this year, my sister and I made this quilt for my parents. They were serving a mission with our <a href="http://www.lds.org/">church</a>
in Bogota Columbia for a year and a half. They came home early last
spring before heading out on another mission this past summer, this time
serving in Huancayo, Peru for the next three years. My sister came up
with the idea to make them a quilt, so working with our other siblings,
we made them this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2tlpsAksPk0KI0NdCtiFArPC8McLo_FZkbiWIdMBNzRY7zpgbv1ZViJxIJUS_Prb2APManpSvM_mftvtUehSZEA87jYLVFcHebn45SMd7shNcQYuZYeGUjTjb5KQgea7KyxNAJgHiGjU/s1600/IMG_0322.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2tlpsAksPk0KI0NdCtiFArPC8McLo_FZkbiWIdMBNzRY7zpgbv1ZViJxIJUS_Prb2APManpSvM_mftvtUehSZEA87jYLVFcHebn45SMd7shNcQYuZYeGUjTjb5KQgea7KyxNAJgHiGjU/s320/IMG_0322.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
We
decided that since we were working on this long-distance (she lives on
the west coast, and we're on the east coast), a layer cake would be the
way to go so that we could have a fun, scrappy, yet still coordinated
look. V&Co's Simply Color line was perfect - lots of fun patterns
in great colors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_Qgxrx5IjJ7UjlGMsvUiiK3Dg71P100XZgVBCeuX5LY2N_GPB-bkqMeveW9XXGx8YSk1mpIzq63iy6jzt5HPvThX6mJqWSBU4C0fDE7RJEHBqonrHLspHcsuwH8-J4LNj1YgXxw9L20/s1600/IMG_0349.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_Qgxrx5IjJ7UjlGMsvUiiK3Dg71P100XZgVBCeuX5LY2N_GPB-bkqMeveW9XXGx8YSk1mpIzq63iy6jzt5HPvThX6mJqWSBU4C0fDE7RJEHBqonrHLspHcsuwH8-J4LNj1YgXxw9L20/s320/IMG_0349.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We used Amanda Jean's <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2010/08/fair-and-square-quilt-pattern.html">Fair and Square pattern</a>,
just sized up to make it a throw quilt. I'm the oldest of five kids,
and each of us and our families are represented by one block - a boat
for a brother who sails, a globe for a sister in the State Department
who lives abroad, the Union Jack for a brother who served his mission in
England, mountains and a tree for a sister who camps a lot, and the

hot pink, unnamed hands belong to our youngest daughter - we hadn't picked out her name

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We
also threw in some blocks that meant something to my parents or our
family - the flag from our summer beach trips, maps of Peru and Columbia
which is where my parents' missions have been, a map of North Carolina
which is where we grew up, bikes since my parents love to ride, a
watering can and shovel for my mom's love of gardening, and the Oakland
temple where my parents were married. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had only done machine applique <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2011/02/our-really-early-advent-calendar.html">once before</a>, so this quilt certainly stretched my abilities. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept the quilting simple - just a wavy stitch on my machine lengthened out. I think it turned out pretty well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyf_IayyCxg-et5QNS3uQOqBLRU0YYOBC1t9wosJcpU1Z2HCveWxtAFzRRZ_O5bkvvSrclXuuWls5XpW3pO0VXipT19XUUmfO5pxeTfgwYbSRVCxdKXgmfZUWm2mb-pG8dELvcIzBbywA/s1600/IMG_0360.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyf_IayyCxg-et5QNS3uQOqBLRU0YYOBC1t9wosJcpU1Z2HCveWxtAFzRRZ_O5bkvvSrclXuuWls5XpW3pO0VXipT19XUUmfO5pxeTfgwYbSRVCxdKXgmfZUWm2mb-pG8dELvcIzBbywA/s320/IMG_0360.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The backing was also simple, and <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-other-side-of-quilt.html">definitely in my wheelhouse</a>, with two large panels and a pieced bit in the middle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk5qyalO9HNTNAOQqTR9NFxiWbj7bBNHDNvboGPzh6yuktN3li-aLIRdUYImSOW5HLJqJ2LNj6QgmPcxgOxs5ag405ezxPlbvMLAMJBQrHRxfE4jNOtFBK5hZtnqliTZCwX_rPeFTTh0U/s1600/IMG_0361.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk5qyalO9HNTNAOQqTR9NFxiWbj7bBNHDNvboGPzh6yuktN3li-aLIRdUYImSOW5HLJqJ2LNj6QgmPcxgOxs5ag405ezxPlbvMLAMJBQrHRxfE4jNOtFBK5hZtnqliTZCwX_rPeFTTh0U/s320/IMG_0361.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
A simple binding in the blue ikat finished it off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWzfBBz-dlQDCvWiMEl_ci0FslcJTDAN7bYaqKZOJqo4wr5ABh_ZUgH-HkjCqTCGvXmNwhkzsUenKNiPb_b1ib56EKNvC-SM7B908IqwhFYvRDnSRLiNRmQq_it0nfO4NYJAfqNStg4Hs/s1600/IMG_0382.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWzfBBz-dlQDCvWiMEl_ci0FslcJTDAN7bYaqKZOJqo4wr5ABh_ZUgH-HkjCqTCGvXmNwhkzsUenKNiPb_b1ib56EKNvC-SM7B908IqwhFYvRDnSRLiNRmQq_it0nfO4NYJAfqNStg4Hs/s320/IMG_0382.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
My
parents loved the quilt, and my mom even cried when she opened up the
package. They appreciated all the time, effort, and love that went into
it. And now they have a little piece of each of us while they're
living so far away for the next three years.<br />
<br />
Now go check out all the other lovely quilts over at Bloggers' Quilt Festival, and thanks for stopping by!

I love the opportunity to see so many other lovely quilts out there in Blogland, all in one place. It *almost* makes up for seeing all the lovely new fabric at Quilt Market. Almost ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN3GaOokeG7G8utCrUpwEPff3JM-2JrHZQW1C8e4zfxLTOjTaL26LkLDKyYVi_4RrNyABXyMmdhDVqTAeDMdQZoehSNPenQDux8QH1eWPJCmxQkHV-l_Zys9M6owC1SN6dJnLld_0NA3c/s1600/IMG_0170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN3GaOokeG7G8utCrUpwEPff3JM-2JrHZQW1C8e4zfxLTOjTaL26LkLDKyYVi_4RrNyABXyMmdhDVqTAeDMdQZoehSNPenQDux8QH1eWPJCmxQkHV-l_Zys9M6owC1SN6dJnLld_0NA3c/s320/IMG_0170.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This quilt is one of my current favorites. I have a major crush on Bonnie and Camille's older line Ruby. The stack of it that I've hoarded/stashed is impressive. In my defense, this is my second finished quilt using it, I have a third in the quilting stage, and a fourth one planned. But who's kidding who - that's only going to make a dent in it. Oh, well. Time to plan more projects!<br />
<br />
Anyway, not only is the fabric one of my favorites, but the recipient is one of my favorite people too. Meet Anne. She's our youngest daughter, born at the end of August.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8o_7rpjRM2JiYOIuxYO1y7nKynT3xSrezmUKRURt6A5a-o2iKFh2GxFlrSNLT-BwcJkzdLrOGBWHcEn4VK2B7FjEYvdWVCo0vG8y6xUELW-XIq-WIueYroNI6s9pnnBQlQFp8GzH7yps/s1600/IMG_0146.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8o_7rpjRM2JiYOIuxYO1y7nKynT3xSrezmUKRURt6A5a-o2iKFh2GxFlrSNLT-BwcJkzdLrOGBWHcEn4VK2B7FjEYvdWVCo0vG8y6xUELW-XIq-WIueYroNI6s9pnnBQlQFp8GzH7yps/s320/IMG_0146.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The combination of Ruby and our new baby was a match made in heaven, I think. But I am a little biased.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJWPh895jcFMLm1usYZ7GUL4GiBnNSEnZY93P1i_e7QxJ8ncP31aBSX2DrYJJ_zVQB7nkcbp31fewSRTNailJl_j3E6vB6Yl8JFvs4PdS58Sm-QrM0_zyoNMYar5lIfxHa2fYfjimEqk/s1600/IMG_0091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTJWPh895jcFMLm1usYZ7GUL4GiBnNSEnZY93P1i_e7QxJ8ncP31aBSX2DrYJJ_zVQB7nkcbp31fewSRTNailJl_j3E6vB6Yl8JFvs4PdS58Sm-QrM0_zyoNMYar5lIfxHa2fYfjimEqk/s320/IMG_0091.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Anyway, I wanted to keep things simple to show off the amazing fabric and because I was finishing this in my last few weeks of pregnancy. I literally finished sewing on the binding two nights before she was born. Enter the lovely hourglass block. Again, a match made in heaven.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiKibnaBXXgo9AY3lGtcVaIhnOeevqXf3565Zz4dCIoq7gRwwjBy6wXArv0FPTEdalitB1pBqxqXTGkjiun9wQu2EsOeh2QsY8fTF5Gb2X5Gao9Ggtw4ex1GMG1Nl0iAv2nnkSlKdKVdQ/s1600/IMG_0313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiKibnaBXXgo9AY3lGtcVaIhnOeevqXf3565Zz4dCIoq7gRwwjBy6wXArv0FPTEdalitB1pBqxqXTGkjiun9wQu2EsOeh2QsY8fTF5Gb2X5Gao9Ggtw4ex1GMG1Nl0iAv2nnkSlKdKVdQ/s320/IMG_0313.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFpXpvydf1qOfnI7clbfA4i_eJ0jq7Qeld1PSbUKUokv3xEZkR_6DU5eEBOxjjNTzK0YHlpjKCLxeG0FkKjsRX5lXIuJgxC7_qRfiSr0duy-QouMV6oHYantAB7-GA4SLnZlYfrNUE7j4/s1600/IMG_0329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFpXpvydf1qOfnI7clbfA4i_eJ0jq7Qeld1PSbUKUokv3xEZkR_6DU5eEBOxjjNTzK0YHlpjKCLxeG0FkKjsRX5lXIuJgxC7_qRfiSr0duy-QouMV6oHYantAB7-GA4SLnZlYfrNUE7j4/s320/IMG_0329.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I kept the quilting simple as well - just straight lines 1/4" on either side of the diagonal seam lines. Enough to keep it all together, but not so much that it overwhelmed the gorgeous fabric or made it overly stiff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLsESzTJcfhBLVDDOBl-kSyJuwM7IverBEfXnvcM8DPQxJwpDT7ZBd_nwCz_UpDv0RzG9tRAA6-jPjWjffd0QPur7KUkM-7lK6n99_H1mbXfwGcBlt_Mud8Hl-6uwx8Vu8Qiso4ZqSfCc/s1600/IMG_0344.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLsESzTJcfhBLVDDOBl-kSyJuwM7IverBEfXnvcM8DPQxJwpDT7ZBd_nwCz_UpDv0RzG9tRAA6-jPjWjffd0QPur7KUkM-7lK6n99_H1mbXfwGcBlt_Mud8Hl-6uwx8Vu8Qiso4ZqSfCc/s320/IMG_0344.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Who doesn't love a good stripey binding?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhngJOzSd9UQD0ssQ1ddXzo9CLiqav6WzZBO1D6p7ZA2IsiXFOMJOD8kDhQBmO_M3PTuGzsrtcEx5du6Y5zPovf3x7w5D4j7n47FonLEGF8odKpLQQe80MDcwFYE0qKosSeH3Ld0v43seQ/s1600/IMG_0339.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhngJOzSd9UQD0ssQ1ddXzo9CLiqav6WzZBO1D6p7ZA2IsiXFOMJOD8kDhQBmO_M3PTuGzsrtcEx5du6Y5zPovf3x7w5D4j7n47FonLEGF8odKpLQQe80MDcwFYE0qKosSeH3Ld0v43seQ/s320/IMG_0339.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
And a simple backing in the pink large floral. Perfect for a little girl. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-57529623202239569012013-10-18T09:32:00.002-04:002013-10-18T09:32:53.059-04:00I'm back! (again...)So, do you remember how I was allegedly <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2013/06/hello-again.html">going to start</a> posting regularly again? Clearly, that didn't happen. I have a really good reason, though, I promise. While my sewing machine was certainly going throughout the summer, I was also a little busy on the home front. Here's why :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgftYEYX2l-tpO4rLb-aZOq1RORj7xysTpJaXxL4x0F_1410stC_1ukEEveiFUhoRjf3RagoCgksR6ViiDr9ZptNLAFvEeVKJD_8miVVPVwxQqF4sWYzK3t8Lp0WgpMvc2M4ExUqtVFkP8/s1600/IMG_0146.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgftYEYX2l-tpO4rLb-aZOq1RORj7xysTpJaXxL4x0F_1410stC_1ukEEveiFUhoRjf3RagoCgksR6ViiDr9ZptNLAFvEeVKJD_8miVVPVwxQqF4sWYzK3t8Lp0WgpMvc2M4ExUqtVFkP8/s320/IMG_0146.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Meet Anne, our newest addition to the family. She's a sweetheart, sleeping and eating happily throughout the day (the evenings are a different story, unfortunately). Her older siblings are quite taken with her, wanting to hold her and help with her all day. The biggest disagreements they have these days are over whose turn it is to hold her.<br />
<br />
In the spring, I set myself a goal to finish five quilts before she arrived. I'm happy to report that I was able to finish all five and even sew another quilt top before the big day. Hooray! <br />
<br />
My first finish was for my parents. They were serving a mission with our <a href="http://www.lds.org/">church</a> in Bogota Columbia for a year and a half. They came home early last spring before heading out on another mission this past summer, this time serving in Huancayo, Peru for the next three years. My sister came up with the idea to make them a quilt, so working with our other siblings, we made them this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2tlpsAksPk0KI0NdCtiFArPC8McLo_FZkbiWIdMBNzRY7zpgbv1ZViJxIJUS_Prb2APManpSvM_mftvtUehSZEA87jYLVFcHebn45SMd7shNcQYuZYeGUjTjb5KQgea7KyxNAJgHiGjU/s1600/IMG_0322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2tlpsAksPk0KI0NdCtiFArPC8McLo_FZkbiWIdMBNzRY7zpgbv1ZViJxIJUS_Prb2APManpSvM_mftvtUehSZEA87jYLVFcHebn45SMd7shNcQYuZYeGUjTjb5KQgea7KyxNAJgHiGjU/s320/IMG_0322.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
We decided that since we were working on this long-distance (she lives on the west coast, and we're on the east coast), a layer cake would be the way to go so that we could have a fun, scrappy, yet still coordinated look. V&Co's Simply Color line was perfect - lots of fun patterns in great colors.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We used Amanda Jean's <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2010/08/fair-and-square-quilt-pattern.html">Fair and Square pattern</a>, just sized up to make it a throw quilt. I'm the oldest of five kids, and each of us and our families are represented by one block - a boat for a brother who sails, a globe for a sister in the State Department who lives abroad, the Union Jack for a brother who served his mission in England, mountains and a tree for a sister who camps a lot, and the beach for our family since we love the beach. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each of the eight grandchildren are represented by their handprint. The tiny hot pink, unnamed hands belong to Anne - we hadn't picked out her name yet :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy_uXcOOOaQlIujfy188d-71Bk9SabwtE1CUL-mmnW9yi2Ij9y3VqM312OCqnyIccFFZvxrQIcY8XJsajMQc1HD_mBQwBFusj9EMSaTzRXPAbobTV8I2eXXdd4BORpeGsVPdmFrXloh54/s1600/IMG_0334.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy_uXcOOOaQlIujfy188d-71Bk9SabwtE1CUL-mmnW9yi2Ij9y3VqM312OCqnyIccFFZvxrQIcY8XJsajMQc1HD_mBQwBFusj9EMSaTzRXPAbobTV8I2eXXdd4BORpeGsVPdmFrXloh54/s320/IMG_0334.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also threw in some blocks that meant something to my parents or our family - the flag from our summer beach trips, maps of Peru and Columbia which is where my parents' missions have been, a map of North Carolina which is where we grew up, bikes since my parents love to ride, a watering can and shovel for my mom's love of gardening, and the Oakland temple where my parents were married. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had only done machine applique <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2011/02/our-really-early-advent-calendar.html">once before</a>, so this quilt certainly stretched my abilities. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLALJSRM5TKF_RmVxO8pqOPIeZCPF9XomtkvuuqA5BTozjo3hJykTZPGBxz-EnndkVIfuKnWuSfYhx8SqXciRUsuQUX_uLZQTt3bhyphenhyphenZ59bC6Mkml3koxitu8rKSCOM3cyrWyHiZ1IWlJU/s1600/IMG_0333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLALJSRM5TKF_RmVxO8pqOPIeZCPF9XomtkvuuqA5BTozjo3hJykTZPGBxz-EnndkVIfuKnWuSfYhx8SqXciRUsuQUX_uLZQTt3bhyphenhyphenZ59bC6Mkml3koxitu8rKSCOM3cyrWyHiZ1IWlJU/s320/IMG_0333.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept the quilting simple - just a wavy stitch on my machine lengthened out. I think it turned out pretty well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyf_IayyCxg-et5QNS3uQOqBLRU0YYOBC1t9wosJcpU1Z2HCveWxtAFzRRZ_O5bkvvSrclXuuWls5XpW3pO0VXipT19XUUmfO5pxeTfgwYbSRVCxdKXgmfZUWm2mb-pG8dELvcIzBbywA/s1600/IMG_0360.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyf_IayyCxg-et5QNS3uQOqBLRU0YYOBC1t9wosJcpU1Z2HCveWxtAFzRRZ_O5bkvvSrclXuuWls5XpW3pO0VXipT19XUUmfO5pxeTfgwYbSRVCxdKXgmfZUWm2mb-pG8dELvcIzBbywA/s320/IMG_0360.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The backing was also simple, and <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-other-side-of-quilt.html">definitely in my wheelhouse</a>, with two large panels and a pieced bit in the middle.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk5qyalO9HNTNAOQqTR9NFxiWbj7bBNHDNvboGPzh6yuktN3li-aLIRdUYImSOW5HLJqJ2LNj6QgmPcxgOxs5ag405ezxPlbvMLAMJBQrHRxfE4jNOtFBK5hZtnqliTZCwX_rPeFTTh0U/s1600/IMG_0361.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk5qyalO9HNTNAOQqTR9NFxiWbj7bBNHDNvboGPzh6yuktN3li-aLIRdUYImSOW5HLJqJ2LNj6QgmPcxgOxs5ag405ezxPlbvMLAMJBQrHRxfE4jNOtFBK5hZtnqliTZCwX_rPeFTTh0U/s320/IMG_0361.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
A simple binding in the blue ikat finished it off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My parents loved the quilt, and my mom even cried when she opened up the package. They appreciated all the time, effort, and love that went into it. And now they have a little piece of each of us while they're living so far away for the next three years. Quilt #1 on my to-do list - done!<br />
<br />
Now go check out the other finishes over at <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/">Amanda Jean's</a>!Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-58211084947932874092013-10-16T10:01:00.001-04:002013-10-16T10:01:38.652-04:00The Other Side of the QuiltI'll be honest - pieced backs are not my favorite aspect of a quilt. While I love the look, the work involved is sometimes a bit more than I want to deal with right after finishing up the top. So if it's a baby quilt, I just dial it in and use one piece of fabric. I have four kids six and under. Something's got to give. <br />
<br />
For a bigger quilt, though, it's time to put on my big-girl sewing pants and piece. I like for my backs to be simple and somehow reference the front. So here are some of my personal favorites -<br />
<br />
This back is from a <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2011/04/heidis-quilt.html">quilt I made</a> two years ago for a dear friend who was moving. I love the two large panels with the vertical piece in the middle,
taken directly from the front of the quilt. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhkjrZWBuaHMsBX2t8-e4OwMgI1irh6bH3Xij5pmvGwNwhwb9DY4Gk_FTETBRBXLqbucbEHtWIoLUROInztKzgALDG5iqidEhIqLNzjuF6trP79p3kDf4SakYYAC3DWhCzpJWmGtRlgtA/s1600/IMG_7027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhkjrZWBuaHMsBX2t8-e4OwMgI1irh6bH3Xij5pmvGwNwhwb9DY4Gk_FTETBRBXLqbucbEHtWIoLUROInztKzgALDG5iqidEhIqLNzjuF6trP79p3kDf4SakYYAC3DWhCzpJWmGtRlgtA/s320/IMG_7027.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2011/07/haylees-quilt.html">This next quilt</a> was also made two years ago, for another dear friend who moved. Again, it has two large panels with a pieced bit in the middle. This time, the hourglasses loosely referenced the triangles from the front.<br />

This next back was for a baby quilt (my only pieced back ever for a baby quilt - you can tell it was a very good friend!). This one was a <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/2012/04/sew-tell-v326-collaborative-baby-quilt.html">joint effort</a> with Amy over at amylouwhosews. Maybe that's why I pieced the back - she quilted and bound this one!<br />

<a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2012.html">This quilt</a> is one I made last year for my niece. This last back comes from a current WIP. This time, I went with two horizontal panels (mixing it up a bit!) with a pieced strip using leftovers from the front. I love Ruby by Bonnie and Camille. I also love this quilt :)<br />

And there you have it - all the pieced backs I've ever done. All five of them ;) Maybe one day I'll branch out and try something different for my backs. Time to go visit Katie over at <a href="http://swimbikequilt.com/2013/10/linky-party-the-other-side-of-the-quilt.html">Swim Bike Quilt </a>for some inspiration!Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-48151287523322508412013-06-03T08:00:00.000-04:002013-06-03T08:00:01.250-04:00Hello again!I'm sorry to be less than regular in my blogging of late. No worries - my sewing machine has been humming along at an impressive (for me) clip for the past few months. But, if you might recall, last spring I finished <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2012.html">a quilt for my niece</a>. It still makes me happy. Well, there is supposed to be a matching quilt for my other niece, and in between some machine difficulties and general lack of enthusiasm for tackling what I now know from experience will be a long and tedious process, that quilt got put at the bottom of my sewing to-do list. For an embarrassingly long time. <br />
<br />
So every project I've worked on since finishing that first quilt last year has felt like I've been two-timing that second quilt. And since somehow not blogging about the other projects means that the second quilt won't find out about them, not blogging has made me feel better about my cheating. Crazy, right? Significant progress has finally been made on the second quilt of late, though, so I feel like I can come out of my sewing closet about my other recent finishes. <br />
<br />
Enough writing. It's time for some pretty pictures, right? So my friend <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/">AmyLouWho</a> and I have been busy sewing up a storm for some of the many babies that have been popping up around here. And can I just say, I love collaborative efforts?!? They are awesome. <br />
<br />
This one was for a friend who was expecting her second, a little boy. I've had a *major* crush on Nicey Jane since it first came out, and I *might* have stashed/hoarded a small mountain of it. Seriously. I finally overcame my fears, though, and made that first cut. It was so hard!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2dP9mxfXkltt9b_A1USAWdcl53pOYPEfiR5YaIGrrbZZRLMOv3b2kaCew9QTxsKeWIYc99jk8JIcYZuI789yo4OpT_iHFRPPsPBz-U5tDFxQwb6V1sWw8zUaBX3xZPTUG0kzr4kvKlCA/s1600/IMG_0184.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2dP9mxfXkltt9b_A1USAWdcl53pOYPEfiR5YaIGrrbZZRLMOv3b2kaCew9QTxsKeWIYc99jk8JIcYZuI789yo4OpT_iHFRPPsPBz-U5tDFxQwb6V1sWw8zUaBX3xZPTUG0kzr4kvKlCA/s320/IMG_0184.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I used Oh, Fransson's <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2011/08/charm-squares-baby-quilts-new-classes-and-updated-pattern.html">Charm square baby quilt pattern</a> for this one, with a few modifications. My favorite baby quilt size is 40" x 48", so I increased the square size to 6" unfinished. The horizontal sashing also grew to 2.5" finished, with the top and bottom coming in at 5" finished. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbMsz1NuPtQkdPb98Br0KhDYRLLSzRuPhFWQsyHVIWuMxn0DEp59f1tIyBoL2MJlgOGmkyHuFEDKliyEPVqo5BAB85FGQ53pPBEjf8hPaCin20Ip4xjI9lD0Oe1l9IGkxZM0DCljlDsU8/s1600/IMG_0188.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbMsz1NuPtQkdPb98Br0KhDYRLLSzRuPhFWQsyHVIWuMxn0DEp59f1tIyBoL2MJlgOGmkyHuFEDKliyEPVqo5BAB85FGQ53pPBEjf8hPaCin20Ip4xjI9lD0Oe1l9IGkxZM0DCljlDsU8/s320/IMG_0188.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Amy did the quilting on this one - some happy loops/figure eights running horizontally. Great work, Amy! <br />
<br />
While I like the look of a pieced back, on a baby quilt, it's just too much work for me. So a happy panel of the bubbles did the trick.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiepKo3SlkhBgS_bHbFUlRrYGIe1LxJ4xzZTOD7R-_FsAAk-A0vR0q7FU9T60ukYGxLoNA8acvivETpq7XfdH_taes0ICHNj5Zp2avEPmeUtTanzh-qtMSaT7Ek8POybshyphenhyphenPcVvUWepaAU/s1600/IMG_0191.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiepKo3SlkhBgS_bHbFUlRrYGIe1LxJ4xzZTOD7R-_FsAAk-A0vR0q7FU9T60ukYGxLoNA8acvivETpq7XfdH_taes0ICHNj5Zp2avEPmeUtTanzh-qtMSaT7Ek8POybshyphenhyphenPcVvUWepaAU/s320/IMG_0191.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
With some lovely striped binding to finish it off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjupDE9RJutrce0SzP3nqWwKISggjgHnyc_KF8_40qglhTJ9CH25wPcw3iHetDSQV2_gpR67MtFj2VdqT2HjsJfrUraaiQn3ZpZQxZ8Ho-yjuYCD9kipln1zVYDMGTYNhus8F_vThCFA6I/s1600/IMG_0197.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjupDE9RJutrce0SzP3nqWwKISggjgHnyc_KF8_40qglhTJ9CH25wPcw3iHetDSQV2_gpR67MtFj2VdqT2HjsJfrUraaiQn3ZpZQxZ8Ho-yjuYCD9kipln1zVYDMGTYNhus8F_vThCFA6I/s320/IMG_0197.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
While cutting into Nicey Jane may have initially been painful (and I may have taken advantage of some sales to restock/add to my mountain), in the end, it was worth it. Seven months after finishing it, this quilt still makes me smile. <br />
<br />
And since Amy and I finished four more quilts in January and February alone, in addition to the one we're currently working on and some solo projects I've had, I've got enough happy quilts to keep this little blog going for awhile now! Hopefully :)Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-38003168984441936522012-10-26T06:32:00.001-04:002012-10-26T06:32:01.009-04:00Joseph's quiltMy younger sister (not so) recently had a son, which meant it was time to make him a quilt. I love baby quilts - their size makes them quick finishes.<br />

I mostly used the tutorial from Elizabeth at Don't Call Me Betsy's <a href="http://www.dontcallmebetsy.com/p/sliced-coins-quilt-along.html">Sliced Coin quilt along</a>. I modified it somewhat to make it baby quilt sized.<br />

I've loved these whales since I first saw them, and when I finally saw them in person, it was over. They came home with me just for this quilt. I also included the Half Moon Modern polka dots, the cross-hatch from Echo, and stripes and argyle from Remix to go along with the whales. I think it makes a cheerful combination.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I kept the quilting simple, just some double echo quilting around the columns, with double lines in the middle of the columns and evenly spaced down the length. One of these days I'll venture into the world of free-motion quilting, but not quite yet.<br />

I'm pretty thrilled, though, that I was able to get some things done. Nothing big, mind you, but still my sewing machine was certainly not neglected this month.<br />
<br />
June<br />
<br />
#1 - Make another skirt - Done! See <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/06/another-skirt.html" target="_blank">here</a> for the rest of the story. And, I've already lopped off the bottom, awkward tier and worn it out and about for date night with my husband. Double done :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSRYJT-aZMwotG1_CEz36v4ad3l3xhjrUJE6P54SCzvR7GTnBk6US0I8XgbranipBkC71vywN9uYCYwE6xuFWBS5JwdSvvbsZ6GDflf41RBViES-TL6LPB597v8pBD2LX-Aun9FmCj0c/s1600/IMG_1261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSRYJT-aZMwotG1_CEz36v4ad3l3xhjrUJE6P54SCzvR7GTnBk6US0I8XgbranipBkC71vywN9uYCYwE6xuFWBS5JwdSvvbsZ6GDflf41RBViES-TL6LPB597v8pBD2LX-Aun9FmCj0c/s320/IMG_1261.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
#2 - Make and apron - Done! I don't have any photographic evidence, but it was finished and worn for its intended purpose.<br />
<br />
#3 - Work on something else - Done! I started a snowball quilt For. Myself. using Kate Spain's first line, Verna. Here's what I've accomplished so far. When I bought the fabric two years ago, I loved it. Now, I wish I had waited for Bonnie and Camille's Ruby line to come out (my current favorite fabric crush), but the fabric is still nice, and it's paid for while Ruby is currently still in the store. Oh, well. Maybe it's time to swap some of my Neptune???<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
July<br />
<br />
#1 - Make a skirt for my daughter. She's been dying for me to make her a skirt since I made mine, so it's time to get that done. As an added bonus, she's only three and she's skinny, so it should be a quick finish. Much less gathering than mine.<br />
<br />
#2 - Work on something else - I could continue working on my quilt or start my husband's quilt. Who knows. But something fun.<br />
<br />
#3 - Having fun - I'm taking my cue from Tracey here. We're heading out of town later this month, and none of the kids are in school right now. So, to be realistic, I don't have a lot of quiet sewing time for the next little while. But, we've been blueberry picking, had a fun 4th, and the beach is calling us. There will be plenty of time for sewing in the fall.<br />
<br />
This past month was productive - I was three-for-three! Here's hoping this month proves as productive!<br />

It feels good to get something off my to-do list, particularly since I'm wearing this one next Wednesday. Nothing like a good deadline to get me motivated :)<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSRYJT-aZMwotG1_CEz36v4ad3l3xhjrUJE6P54SCzvR7GTnBk6US0I8XgbranipBkC71vywN9uYCYwE6xuFWBS5JwdSvvbsZ6GDflf41RBViES-TL6LPB597v8pBD2LX-Aun9FmCj0c/s1600/IMG_1261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSRYJT-aZMwotG1_CEz36v4ad3l3xhjrUJE6P54SCzvR7GTnBk6US0I8XgbranipBkC71vywN9uYCYwE6xuFWBS5JwdSvvbsZ6GDflf41RBViES-TL6LPB597v8pBD2LX-Aun9FmCj0c/s320/IMG_1261.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I used this lovely fabric, from Anna Griffin's Honoka collection. I hadn't seen it anywhere previously, but my LQS had it, and it seemed a great fit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFV2bEzA8tXPZjbBv7IJ0HoDRLepShyphenhyphenn4M9hHq_CoM62fSmQdHo8ih3Q5CTNWRnioO1B8aYiXGKTGE3_tl8vlPqpqqnINP6Has-3rhitvzhINS-vJMsaDhWDAVlOU1RDsRVByweBAqwg/s1600/IMG_1214.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZFV2bEzA8tXPZjbBv7IJ0HoDRLepShyphenhyphenn4M9hHq_CoM62fSmQdHo8ih3Q5CTNWRnioO1B8aYiXGKTGE3_tl8vlPqpqqnINP6Has-3rhitvzhINS-vJMsaDhWDAVlOU1RDsRVByweBAqwg/s320/IMG_1214.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I used <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/" target="_blank">Amy's</a> semi-famous tiered skirt pattern, modifying it by only making four of the pattern's five tiers and eliminating one of the fourth tier's five panels to keep the volume and weight down. I am walking/pushing a handcart for twelve miles in this skirt, after all. In hindsight, I should have used all five panels - there wasn't enough of a difference between the bottom two tiers, so there was almost nothing to gather. But at least it will be a little less full and heavy, right? Plus, when I get home, it's losing that bottom tier anyway, and I need to wear it in five days, so I'm just leaving it as is. <br />
<br />
Hooray for finishing something else up, and now on to making my apron for the same trek. I'll be relieved when all my trek sewing is done, and I can get back to my comfort zone - quilts. Even if it is the next <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2012.html" target="_blank">Central Park Urban Lattice quilt</a>.<br />
<br />
Now, go check out all the other finishes at Sew & Tell Friday!<br />

But looking back, I got more done that I thought. Hooray!<br />
<br />
May -<br />
<br />
#1 - The Central Park Urban Lattice quilt - it's done! The quilt part, at least. The duvet aspect still needs a tiny bit of work, but I'm still thrilled that it's almost done. You can read more about it <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/05/bloggers-quilt-festival-spring-2012.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It's sitting on my dresser now, needing to go through the wash, and it still makes me happy looking at it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqH8FNmMxMxp6peN9opa0oE1_nnkpscDWIdU8H4z95gvKnV-cOE9-uCkRYQCgciqltDZnwWkfudwBDO0j9QUW5qHVLH4G4LJJdYAeDo1Cz5BB1BnDpbMv9vuLduP7-eKYMGxrhpMQUMks/s1600/IMG_1130.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqH8FNmMxMxp6peN9opa0oE1_nnkpscDWIdU8H4z95gvKnV-cOE9-uCkRYQCgciqltDZnwWkfudwBDO0j9QUW5qHVLH4G4LJJdYAeDo1Cz5BB1BnDpbMv9vuLduP7-eKYMGxrhpMQUMks/s320/IMG_1130.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
#2 - Continue working on the second Central Park Urban Lattice quilt - that's a no. I didn't even touch it. I think I was still going through a bit of a quilt hangover from the first one. While that quilt is lovely, an overwhelming amount of time went into it, and I'm having a hard time getting excited to do it all. over. again. Maybe in July I'll start again.<br />
<br />
#3 - Finish Joshua's quilt - it's done! You can read more about it <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/05/sew-tell-friday.html" target="_blank">here</a>. He's been sleeping with the quilt every night and nap since I finished it. Seeing your quilts in action is one of the better feeling as a quilter. And that it's your cute-as-a-button little one makes it that much sweeter.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

#4 - Make a skirt - it's done too! You can read more about it <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/06/sew-tell-friday.html" target="_blank">here</a>. This Secret Garden fabric worked out so nicely, and as a bonus, the skirt even fits. And I successfully put in my second zipper ever. Whew.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
#5 – And in a crazy, unprecedented bout of productivity, I
actually snuck in a bonus project. I
know – I was floored too. A friend is having a baby shortly, and three of us got together and made her a baby quilt. I pieced the top, <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/" target="_blank">Amy</a> basted and quilted, and Teri bound. I love dividing and conquering. And this makes up for the complete fail on #2, right?</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
And on to June -<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
#1 - Make another skirt - I have the pattern, fabric, and if everyone can stay healthy, I have a sewing date with Amy for tomorrow night to get started. It's one of her semi-famous tiered skirt. I'm very excited.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
#2 - Make an apron - For the same pioneer trek for which I'm making/made the skirts, I need an apron. Boring, but necessary. Blah. I'm thinking Kona Medium Gray with the fabric from the skirts for the pockets? We'll see how motivated I get.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
#3 - Work on something else. It could be the snowball Verna quilt I just started for myself, a quilt for my husband, or the second Central Park Urban Lattice Quilt. I'll be happy with progress on any of the above.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

There it is - my month in review, and my goals for this month. It seems I use my sewing machine more than I think. And that's awesome. </div>

So what about you? What are your plans for June? And go check out all the other completions for this month!</div>

It's a fun bug to catch :)<br />

I'm going on a pioneer trek later this month with the youth from our church. Since ankle-length skirts suitable for walking around in ninety-degree weather while pushing a handcart are a little hard to find at Target these days, I got to sew. I used this large paisley print from Sandi Henderson's Secret Garden line. I figured I might as well use lovely fabric, especially when you find it half off. And blue and yellow together make me happy these days. <br />
<br />
This skirt was a fairly simple one to sew up, even for someone who last made a skirt in middle skirt. This may be my second zipper ever, which would explain why there are no close-up shots of the zipper, facing, or any other fiddly parts. Thankfully, none of said fiddly parts are in any shape noticeable to the casual observer. Whew. And when I get home from the trek, I'm planning on chopping off the bottom twelve inches and having a fun just-below-knee-length skirt for the summer. Hooray!<br />
<br />
Next up is one of Amy's semi-famous tiered skirts using this fabric. I'm excited.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One for Bloggers' Quilt Festival and one for *finally* finishing this quilt!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This quilt has been a WIP for a very, very long time (at least for me). You can read more about its history <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2012/04/just-three.html" target="_blank">here</a>. The short story is that it's for my niece, whose favorite color is purple. Purple is not the easiest fabric to find in the quilting world, but Kate Spain's Central Park (one of my all-time favorite fabric lines) is amazing. Seriously gorgeous. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3LwKLNwexNqQn1wy84nwytKOoZGWo-DuOBUKnjQAP3pMqmTrZHfxRvF048q3qEX78aJceslTGQOiY2xSx6Q9FEQULz9mN49oPb1e53Uo4a90oUTeI1Rr3u3lBMfPejRpl3B383ReiQDg/s1600/IMG_1170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3LwKLNwexNqQn1wy84nwytKOoZGWo-DuOBUKnjQAP3pMqmTrZHfxRvF048q3qEX78aJceslTGQOiY2xSx6Q9FEQULz9mN49oPb1e53Uo4a90oUTeI1Rr3u3lBMfPejRpl3B383ReiQDg/s320/IMG_1170.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The pattern is from Cara at Me? a Mom?'s <a href="http://www.meamomblog.com/p/urban-lattice-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Urban Lattice Quilt-along</a>. I used Kona White and Medium Gray. I adapted the pattern slightly, choosing to focus more on Kate Spain's stunning fabrics. I followed Lee at Freshly Pieced's <a href="http://freshlypieced.blogspot.com/2011/01/lattice-work.html" target="_blank">modifications</a>. While I do love math, it's nice when someone else does it for you. I think it came out pretty well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The back is two simple panels of fabric with triangles between, referencing all the triangles on the front. My favorite pieced backs are simple and have something to do with the front. Check and check.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb7Gi0u1_Ort9UjYcZoKjTXtkivMBFTOYPUxTUrK6HUXseObBGVPOu8fV5rplBuHO8KApJ_JUp0aTzr5RX8-Nuj7L8ycJYMz8IRsXCL8xkJNXXhPqFnuG7SOSgch7_8e_UOYyjFqaaYlE/s1600/IMG_1047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb7Gi0u1_Ort9UjYcZoKjTXtkivMBFTOYPUxTUrK6HUXseObBGVPOu8fV5rplBuHO8KApJ_JUp0aTzr5RX8-Nuj7L8ycJYMz8IRsXCL8xkJNXXhPqFnuG7SOSgch7_8e_UOYyjFqaaYlE/s320/IMG_1047.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
The quilting is minimal, with echo quilting around the diamonds and lattices and alternating horizontal and vertical lines. It shows particularly well on the back.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxWlHMwuer4k6uQgfbOUoqj3ociOAbT9-Azv3bPkOt2c7nyubdV-im3zprMnpmMbkraXaavr3zo-5mneyQRlyVuyBzq1aVOR-eHoRIDz-xkfF2Z1Jo4PZkogFw2FlymF7_OS026Y7pmn8/s1600/IMG_1187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxWlHMwuer4k6uQgfbOUoqj3ociOAbT9-Azv3bPkOt2c7nyubdV-im3zprMnpmMbkraXaavr3zo-5mneyQRlyVuyBzq1aVOR-eHoRIDz-xkfF2Z1Jo4PZkogFw2FlymF7_OS026Y7pmn8/s320/IMG_1187.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The binding is another simple one, using the blue cobblestone from Central Park. <br />

When I talked to my sister about the quilts, she mentioned that she'd be sewing buttonholes right into the quilts to enable her to attach sheets and use them as duvets in the winter. I (inwardly) about died and then suggested that I'd try to figure out something a little more elegant (and not so painful!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the back of the quilt, you'll notice a gray strip that runs around the outside. That sneaky gray strip has the buttonholes that allow the quilt to double as a duvet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5e46ntQKJUPKSIgR89O_05CFkQT_D20bVaBrhnIpNzvMhMSlDyqeIDSKrWo-1IjJlEYR0B9NaSaxmXk9kTAm9dWCBRItuJWc9gwSKeYsu9xTfXInHuCFgrx4-wdL0vKjfh95cIW7tSHI/s1600/IMG_1127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5e46ntQKJUPKSIgR89O_05CFkQT_D20bVaBrhnIpNzvMhMSlDyqeIDSKrWo-1IjJlEYR0B9NaSaxmXk9kTAm9dWCBRItuJWc9gwSKeYsu9xTfXInHuCFgrx4-wdL0vKjfh95cIW7tSHI/s320/IMG_1127.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about finishing the quilt and with how well it turned out. I hope my niece loves it too! <br />

We had had our youngest a few month's before, and I so loved that quilt that I decided to make one just like it for our little guy Joshua. I cut the fabric out at the same time so that when some free time opened up to finish Joshua's quilt, it would go that much more quickly. Fast forward a year and a half, and his quilt was still sitting undone. And his second birthday is coming up next month. Oops. We won't talk about how many other quilts for other people I finished while his sat undone. So this quilt got put on the fast-track, and I finally finished it this week. Hooray!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love all the blues and greens and the geometric shapes in the quilt. He loves to find all his favorite animals. Everybody wins.<br />

The backing was simple - a panel of the green. The fabrics are Alexander Henry's 2D Zoo in pool and Anna Griffin's Darcey line from a few years back.<br />

<br />
First, I wanted to finish this quilt for my niece. Clearly that didn't happen. I've been waiting to hear back from my sister about a special request for the back of the quilt (it's going to be a quilt/duvet cover), so there is a good reason I didn't finish. It just needs the duvet cover addition and the binding to be done. And that will be finished this month. Hooray!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoFcnlGpz3YoOUCZahTRYwu6cCTj2_P489-MpxXKths44kssys6b5rGwMplxvIXUgtwyS9bcwESpL3iPCmkvu1hxz2yCKL1pbgkeRs_Br4-Q-qiQD7YniHxCCngSEKlzd_LoJjWWe5rEI/s1600/IMG_0824.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoFcnlGpz3YoOUCZahTRYwu6cCTj2_P489-MpxXKths44kssys6b5rGwMplxvIXUgtwyS9bcwESpL3iPCmkvu1hxz2yCKL1pbgkeRs_Br4-Q-qiQD7YniHxCCngSEKlzd_LoJjWWe5rEI/s320/IMG_0824.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The second quilt for my other niece actually did get started. The paper blocks are all cut out, and all but fifteen (of eighty) have the appropriate lines drawn. The gray strips are all cut out, and I've started cutting the white strips. I'm going to count that as a success. Double hooray!!!<br />
<br />
The quilt for my son isn't quite finished, but I'm okay with that. I really like to handstitch the binding on while watching TV with my husband (then it's a totally productive use of my time ;), but it's been busy around here. Just a few nights to go, though, and then my little one will finally get his blankie. He's excited.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSwA4cwKDV-qVCvxmkyStjf1_KJu3UUD-C_cxxB4GyjQ3PK2V7RBKaYF6tJ6qu2KsAPJm3QdhZd21EYb799xJ7__hN77v68L3xlWBGG3mOWcxu0n272S2mUFPwLQhZ1RSgbWtkcXZpMs/s1600/IMG_0794.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5tmY8iQXHJKXk3euVRdjwmAZoxg2SXZhzAUL45sia2zCBxjj-HX___RiGmrlDauCdJziXgaLSWwjED8yOQ2yyI7pX5d2yOYvRrliJW6QBxPaQr9NuJU-IDfbHRleyRle9CXlqACa-1sA/s1600/IMG_0827.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5tmY8iQXHJKXk3euVRdjwmAZoxg2SXZhzAUL45sia2zCBxjj-HX___RiGmrlDauCdJziXgaLSWwjED8yOQ2yyI7pX5d2yOYvRrliJW6QBxPaQr9NuJU-IDfbHRleyRle9CXlqACa-1sA/s320/IMG_0827.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
So while none of my projects from April were finished, significant progress was made. And I'm thrilled with that.<br />
<br />
So what about May? The list is going to look familiar.<br />
#1 - Finish the first Central Park Urban Lattice quilt! Really!<br />
#2 - Continue to work on the second quilt - maybe finish all the blocks this month? Or a quilt top if I'm feeling ridiculously productive (or my house stays ridiculously dirty)?<br />
#3 - Finish Joshua's quilt. He turns two in June, so I *have* to get it done before then.<br />
#4 - Since #3 is sooo close, I'm going to throw in an extra one. Our youth group at church is going on a pioneer trek this summer, and my husband and I are going as a ma and a pa. We get to dress in somewhat-period-appropriate clothing while pushing handcarts and camping in the woods. Yee haw. Since ankle-length dresses are hard to find these days, I'm sewing my own skirts. And since we're going at the end of June, it's time to get my sew on. I'm a little scared - it's been since middle school that I've made clothes for anyone other than my daughter's doll. I scored some of Sandi Henderson's Secret Garden Paisley in the turquoise and yellow half off at Fat Quarter Shop. *Swoon* It's going to be awesome. And the best part is that when I get home from trek, I lop off the bottom portion of the skirt and end up with a cute summer skirt. And my daughter gets a matching skirt with the lopped-off portion. Hooray!<br />
<br />
There's my list for May - it looks like it's time for me to go bond with my sewing machine! Go visit Tracey to see the other Just Three folks and their accomplishments :)<br />

I'm making headway on two out of three. Joshua's quilt is now quilted and just needs to be bound. He was sleeping with it in his crib until I stole it yesterday so that I could finish the binding. It's nice to know that project is already will loved, if still unfinished.<br /><br />My other major project is the big Central Park Urban Lattice quilt. I'd made it through almost two-thirds of the quilting when I finally made it down to my LQS and purchased a walking foot for my machine. Yes, I'm embarrassed to admit I've been doing all my quilting with just a regular sewing foot. Anyway, I made the switch mid-quilt, and now I almost wish I hadn't. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFsscTZJlUVAitvnxazQumsq4L6LQQP50fgi_BCiljLGk9GCTNGIS2pP_t5UWw0NbqsXwK-LH__uLYgVIA0J6ji-PNf64gL5adknruWM6oy1b_q4iVckpQ0AkzpJ2orjJx2bpUu5LuM8/s1600/photo%25283%2529.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnFsscTZJlUVAitvnxazQumsq4L6LQQP50fgi_BCiljLGk9GCTNGIS2pP_t5UWw0NbqsXwK-LH__uLYgVIA0J6ji-PNf64gL5adknruWM6oy1b_q4iVckpQ0AkzpJ2orjJx2bpUu5LuM8/s320/photo%25283%2529.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732105718377826098" border="0" /></a>A walking foot is amazing! This is seriously a game-changer in the quilting department. My stitches are much more even, and the top isn't shifting or puckering. I love my walking foot. And the $25 price tag doesn't hurt either. The only downside is that now it makes me want to go back and revisit some of my earlier quilting. We'll see how motivated I feel.<br /><br />I hope you're making progress on your goals too! Happy sewing!Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-38597741659095785532012-04-06T11:17:00.004-04:002012-04-06T11:30:30.830-04:00A collaborative finish<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDq7AXAsyzG6fXhsXJnjiX9GxJgI8nsIG1Kh7A8G3DHMONiGQDf6cAoWy86ySVScRzL4DdcYKvyV3UD_rmN-AZITi8SKco8WJ5ZOX7VeopkudeKySpPEMWpaOmd52GdaVJgDaiptpVK7Q/s1600/IMG_0707.JPG"><span style="display: block;" id="formatbar_Buttons"></span></a>So, if you've been over to Sew and Tell Friday at Amy's blog, you've already read about this quilt. We've been working together on a few projects of late, and the collaboration has been great. Read - we get to give people cute (in our opinion) quilts without having to do all the work. Hooray!<br />This was for a good mutual friend who's expecting Boy #3. I picked up the Riley Blake All Star fabric a long while ago, and it's been patiently waiting for the right projects. This was one of them. I had liked <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/07/finished-plus-quilt.html">this quilt</a> made by Cluck Cluck Sew awhile back, and Mama had pinned it as a favorite too. Great fabric + great pattern = a super cute quilt. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDq7AXAsyzG6fXhsXJnjiX9GxJgI8nsIG1Kh7A8G3DHMONiGQDf6cAoWy86ySVScRzL4DdcYKvyV3UD_rmN-AZITi8SKco8WJ5ZOX7VeopkudeKySpPEMWpaOmd52GdaVJgDaiptpVK7Q/s1600/IMG_0707.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDq7AXAsyzG6fXhsXJnjiX9GxJgI8nsIG1Kh7A8G3DHMONiGQDf6cAoWy86ySVScRzL4DdcYKvyV3UD_rmN-AZITi8SKco8WJ5ZOX7VeopkudeKySpPEMWpaOmd52GdaVJgDaiptpVK7Q/s320/IMG_0707.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728308062936642754" border="0" /></a>I paired the All Star with Kona Snow.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6SdAo41yNsNxLqUjWbPAb-62zmSAO-DOFv6vyTIKZwTc1CSXOY89iox9bnAKojxeIn1AyDsuB8VlDZwVqR2CBetiIFoJmMHWT7U3FKsBtbP_Tg3C08w9AJTW6oyt6OL7Ge8b48rbdnnw/s1600/IMG_0697.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6SdAo41yNsNxLqUjWbPAb-62zmSAO-DOFv6vyTIKZwTc1CSXOY89iox9bnAKojxeIn1AyDsuB8VlDZwVqR2CBetiIFoJmMHWT7U3FKsBtbP_Tg3C08w9AJTW6oyt6OL7Ge8b48rbdnnw/s320/IMG_0697.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728308055517171170" border="0" /></a>The back makes me happy too. I like a pieced backing, but it has to make sense in relation for the front. And this one does. At least to me.<br />So while I didn't completely finish this quilt, I did finish my part, so I'm counting it as a finish. I think I've seen some more growing bellies around town lately, so this may not be the end of Amy's and my baby-quilt-making days!<br />Go check out the other lovelies at Sew and Tell Friday and <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2012/04/finish-it-up-friday-week-22.html">Finish it up Friday</a>!<br /><center><a href="http://www.mommyandbeyond.blogspot.com/search/label/sew-n-tell" target="_blank"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgupH88-rv881huNwHlEO5_zX72Ks2P2e-QhiPbOve3asAagjfdXmlmRKaucjjAHU28dkPPX1onGiLwc7AtZe6WHVrkBGZ7I8zGcHzqUdOBeTUUt-ml4Nrw59hO__2jAReKRfUiv3Qx0ug/s1600/sew%2526tell+button-+125x125" /></a></center>Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-4358436477212260502012-04-04T15:32:00.003-04:002012-04-04T15:47:20.673-04:00Just threeWhen I saw Tracey's Just Three for April challenge, I knew it was high time for me to get going. See, I've been working on commissioned quilts for my nieces. My sister first contacted me last May. But then we moved, three kids are time-consuming, and my old machine was begging to be thrown out the window. Seriously. That thing had a death wish.<br />Fast forward to October, and I get my mom's much-nicer machine while they're out of the country. One problem solved. After some initial I'm-so-nervous-about-paper-piecing jitters and dry runs that took about three months (along with painting our entire downstairs), I finally got moving in January. Oh, and did I mention these are twin-sized quilts and that there are two of them???<br />So, here's my Just Three -<br />#1 - Finish the first #!@& quilt. Like, quilted, bound, finished. Don't get me wrong - I think this quilt is sooo pretty. See? <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoKE89NQu-AxrxW0RwFrh0c_dUnsH6Zx22_hQM7RFlaBhJVXPmioXh-2uny1kE512eCROhVkXpmv7Cl4GdmRfz8Mxqfvhf4R1muhx0QSGN7aF9gHZWQWqjNhlVHk9au4spAyAxt58rFQ/s1600/photo%25282%2529.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoKE89NQu-AxrxW0RwFrh0c_dUnsH6Zx22_hQM7RFlaBhJVXPmioXh-2uny1kE512eCROhVkXpmv7Cl4GdmRfz8Mxqfvhf4R1muhx0QSGN7aF9gHZWQWqjNhlVHk9au4spAyAxt58rFQ/s320/photo%25282%2529.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727633961948016258" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_pdYrYdwGd_KjScHMNCzkd8D93BgASTIwnr_FNVSzObGkPRfsy6pr-eYKvIvqKHUyAhdUNOjllRFYJ9mg1maVlh9d3F2TmB47v-pjrvSwCYbh4vwBAyRlpSsfBKYhlwdjlvUv0yTTrzk/s1600/photo.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_pdYrYdwGd_KjScHMNCzkd8D93BgASTIwnr_FNVSzObGkPRfsy6pr-eYKvIvqKHUyAhdUNOjllRFYJ9mg1maVlh9d3F2TmB47v-pjrvSwCYbh4vwBAyRlpSsfBKYhlwdjlvUv0yTTrzk/s320/photo.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727633967960218226" border="0" /></a>The problem is that it's just taking me forever. And it's taking me so long that I don't want to sew very much because I *have* to finish these before I can do anything else. So I need to finish.<br />#2 - Start the next #!@& quilt. I'll take any definition of start, including thinking about cutting fabric.<br />#3 - Finish this little guy's quilt. It was supposed to be a baby quilt, but he turns two in June. Oops. Do you see how excited he is about it? It's time.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJKjxl5CubxhIu_I1w79YzXS6gT9mx_Tjue4Hqc-K3BaIpyHwD8bwZtS2sLQmfRFnPlrpaM1_GgB3V1LZLeGHcSVn3sUzHSvd8ljtHj0_u0ei1uqC5uxquMDj7WvwvEn6_cxKHCvEeXI/s1600/photo%25281%2529.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJKjxl5CubxhIu_I1w79YzXS6gT9mx_Tjue4Hqc-K3BaIpyHwD8bwZtS2sLQmfRFnPlrpaM1_GgB3V1LZLeGHcSVn3sUzHSvd8ljtHj0_u0ei1uqC5uxquMDj7WvwvEn6_cxKHCvEeXI/s320/photo%25281%2529.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727633950957802866" border="0" /></a><br />So there are my goals for April. I came across <a href="http://www.amylouwhosews.com/2011/11/amylouwho-sew-tell-v39-baby-quilt.html">Sew & Tell Friday</a>, expecting to see what Amy's been up to this week, and, um, it's my quilt! Major blushing! So here it is!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio0IxMX2Jen48uuGHZK0bhMTdEBwPx6OHgQnQYfdSVwDsiVqN1dEyxvTIyFg8AQQxNgATvkCXJRngMWsLd3GtoA9qNQxtLiemADJCQXaoVxa6fGN7PdIWdctalXvzP5NB9lRCMj7U5Gwg/s1600/IMG_9195.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio0IxMX2Jen48uuGHZK0bhMTdEBwPx6OHgQnQYfdSVwDsiVqN1dEyxvTIyFg8AQQxNgATvkCXJRngMWsLd3GtoA9qNQxtLiemADJCQXaoVxa6fGN7PdIWdctalXvzP5NB9lRCMj7U5Gwg/s320/IMG_9195.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676361861750297330" border="0" /></a>I made this for a sweet friend who is expecting her third baby next month. I'll be honest - when I started this project last winter, Adriane wasn't even pregnant yet. But, the joys of three small children, moving, and some major church commitments has meant that my sewing machine and I haven't exactly been close of late. So, this one came out of the WIP pile and turned into a finish just in time for her shower. Hurray!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQsNwNUZg-2kk1qwpVF5BtMuu2aZZ0JjkQTOuyvNbU3_Xricst2E1fTXIMghtQX-5m4NDtxLRzf-q-a4kEZRHS5m5Drysg0gaKAOjjKhdwf3Ce98MVGMF4Y2pqABqQtLN1_Mah9D8xR2I/s1600/IMG_9207.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQsNwNUZg-2kk1qwpVF5BtMuu2aZZ0JjkQTOuyvNbU3_Xricst2E1fTXIMghtQX-5m4NDtxLRzf-q-a4kEZRHS5m5Drysg0gaKAOjjKhdwf3Ce98MVGMF4Y2pqABqQtLN1_Mah9D8xR2I/s320/IMG_9207.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676362248674930178" border="0" /></a>I love this quilt. The first plus quilt I saw, ages ago, was <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arajane/4342163425/in/set-72157625814743383">this one</a> by Arajane. I loved it, but the busyness of all the prints on top of each other was a little much for me. For mine, I used the white to break it all up. Happiness.<br /><br />The quilting was very simple - echo quilting in the white pluses only. The pearl bracelet binding was a no-brainer.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRw56opUlJp946ZgIc74JQImCvdG7XvjWJ7CSzbRiqKHfE_LkOJt9KPSj3dVuS_Jadi5Kv_cVTkCvyoDkgcmxiGOemoObI1NOQoejWbOgaQz7IaaD_8pc5um4kKQcLtEgiy1MFqVgKlb4/s1600/IMG_9212.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRw56opUlJp946ZgIc74JQImCvdG7XvjWJ7CSzbRiqKHfE_LkOJt9KPSj3dVuS_Jadi5Kv_cVTkCvyoDkgcmxiGOemoObI1NOQoejWbOgaQz7IaaD_8pc5um4kKQcLtEgiy1MFqVgKlb4/s320/IMG_9212.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676358994401799330" border="0" /></a>As was the lollilop tree backing.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgup0E2KwRP-Xm1aDD0ceEyHjoYb-hXYhH1_LSan-L_lyBKMLKkmpuhS9YUAT07HKwnXkC6OMyPeISmBmwO0hrog9n66sNOn2sAZXFO7AdieLmD_Spdko4bgNJqAedNzBzAD9MkEZ3l1ig/s1600/IMG_9194.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgup0E2KwRP-Xm1aDD0ceEyHjoYb-hXYhH1_LSan-L_lyBKMLKkmpuhS9YUAT07HKwnXkC6OMyPeISmBmwO0hrog9n66sNOn2sAZXFO7AdieLmD_Spdko4bgNJqAedNzBzAD9MkEZ3l1ig/s320/IMG_9194.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676359003650812274" border="0" /></a>All in all, it's one of my favorite quilts yet.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCumyGTXoDi7mTiqE7WJfTVgyLxOy-_s1C4GykidfYW-Ou3VSmO8XlU6mmKW5bLEmCFWElPrZJ03uVA09pj_8T18oeBes5iz8dbjt9OhlOIgifR4zsnT7z5jDBptr-2a_WEH7BleQ26ts/s1600/IMG_9187.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCumyGTXoDi7mTiqE7WJfTVgyLxOy-_s1C4GykidfYW-Ou3VSmO8XlU6mmKW5bLEmCFWElPrZJ03uVA09pj_8T18oeBes5iz8dbjt9OhlOIgifR4zsnT7z5jDBptr-2a_WEH7BleQ26ts/s320/IMG_9187.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5676361855932067634" border="0" /></a>And now to stop blushing and get back to my next project - those urban lattices and Central Park!<br /><br />Go check out the other lovelies at Sew & Tell!<center><a href="http://www.mommyandbeyond.blogspot.com/search/label/sew-n-tell" target="_blank"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgupH88-rv881huNwHlEO5_zX72Ks2P2e-QhiPbOve3asAagjfdXmlmRKaucjjAHU28dkPPX1onGiLwc7AtZe6WHVrkBGZ7I8zGcHzqUdOBeTUUt-ml4Nrw59hO__2jAReKRfUiv3Qx0ug/s1600/sew%2526tell+button-+125x125" /></a><br />And I'm also linking up to <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2011/11/finish-it-up-friday-week-4.html">Finish it up Friday</a>!<br /></center>Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-35764066742152219292011-07-01T06:24:00.007-04:002011-07-01T06:49:49.376-04:00Haylee's QuiltAnother month, another friend moving away. This is one of the major downsides to being the civilian in a military town - your friends all move away every three years. The upside is that new, fabulous friends also move in every year.<br /><br />Anyway, Haylee has been a great friend these past three years. She was always there when I needed someone and was always understanding and sympathetic of the joys of lots of little kids (she has five!). She also helped throw the baby shower for my last not-so-little one. She and her family left last week for a new duty station, and I couldn't see her off empty-handed. So I made this.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMcdd7N2iIW7qMMZ95zJksTuehVBeSPwRVA23euuquX4Nacs15__OE924Anp1u4Tw3ZGF_fTDWF4gwgjPWoWXt3g8VdQbXul3SKzVJYz67DT3GFG7hVcmwLrFY9kmEAofBOJxxoH7vxRQ/s1600/IMG_7703.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMcdd7N2iIW7qMMZ95zJksTuehVBeSPwRVA23euuquX4Nacs15__OE924Anp1u4Tw3ZGF_fTDWF4gwgjPWoWXt3g8VdQbXul3SKzVJYz67DT3GFG7hVcmwLrFY9kmEAofBOJxxoH7vxRQ/s320/IMG_7703.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624330153501145058" border="0" /></a>I had this idea to use a layer cake of Freebird by Momo and Kona Bone for the HSTs, so I started cruising Flickr for inspirations. I found <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pikku-kettu/4833878664/in/faves-41737995@N03/">this</a>, which was exactly what I was thinking about and fabulous, and so I went with it.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8vMdtMFVQ1z2BcmdnAOU26gWDTdqIaHhVuzuurzcdX9SBhFqO548uDwi9tAPJUPFtw8INBx4iV_NGfUmzSic3rVX-VPB7PyGEANyAxeqtO2HSkzDqVi0H9KR7n90xWx59U40nHsFrsFA/s1600/IMG_7735.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8vMdtMFVQ1z2BcmdnAOU26gWDTdqIaHhVuzuurzcdX9SBhFqO548uDwi9tAPJUPFtw8INBx4iV_NGfUmzSic3rVX-VPB7PyGEANyAxeqtO2HSkzDqVi0H9KR7n90xWx59U40nHsFrsFA/s320/IMG_7735.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624332580620026626" border="0" /></a>The quilting was simple - just echo quilting 1/4" away from the seams, only on the Bone side.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxRvcYOXE9nqSi8wloiI9I-QCZk6rJ39Uh3q3RWOPxUkpTibLjRGtuXfvyYuvCOJqW01X8FiyzZmlslmhvzI9f650-p9J9HYtj_bXRtA49OR2NLE1DRy6A7Bs9XTmk5mxOidFYKCq76UI/s1600/IMG_7693.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxRvcYOXE9nqSi8wloiI9I-QCZk6rJ39Uh3q3RWOPxUkpTibLjRGtuXfvyYuvCOJqW01X8FiyzZmlslmhvzI9f650-p9J9HYtj_bXRtA49OR2NLE1DRy6A7Bs9XTmk5mxOidFYKCq76UI/s320/IMG_7693.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624329321141491778" border="0" /></a>My favorite part of the quilting is the tiny triangles it made in the corners of each large triangle.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMb7ATW2s86wWoEA8W7vwd6zeHIiAHVIxxGNm9HSAJVeG7kh04bFCzh5567iKgXoJlir7V6x6KHQIrqyaeEN6-2LQ0oVKtb1Wi-FeEG7NDJWSWYFRmHgkVI2IC6e8DLyGqaaM2T92RAhw/s1600/IMG_7726.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMb7ATW2s86wWoEA8W7vwd6zeHIiAHVIxxGNm9HSAJVeG7kh04bFCzh5567iKgXoJlir7V6x6KHQIrqyaeEN6-2LQ0oVKtb1Wi-FeEG7NDJWSWYFRmHgkVI2IC6e8DLyGqaaM2T92RAhw/s320/IMG_7726.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624329319767985250" border="0" /></a>For my pieced backing, I used a few extra HSTs to make hourglass blocks. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVq5NXSDpLoNGLcYwnCimHPZ7D8EtCz2hHW1PB5CEYw_HO8NhYBMnzzhxMSp_vJGER-CtDFpfcnW5vuSK6zMj4EX2tm2mm0dPr8B9zM3a3N8vs3z2A4msqnBMMJjM58itN1tR043rruaA/s1600/IMG_7706.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVq5NXSDpLoNGLcYwnCimHPZ7D8EtCz2hHW1PB5CEYw_HO8NhYBMnzzhxMSp_vJGER-CtDFpfcnW5vuSK6zMj4EX2tm2mm0dPr8B9zM3a3N8vs3z2A4msqnBMMJjM58itN1tR043rruaA/s320/IMG_7706.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624329309905273218" border="0" /></a>I love how the hourglass blocks reference the front without copying it directly. That first year was brutal - we were a one-car family, I didn't know a lot of people, halfway through that year I got pregnant with our second and it was not a fun pregnancy, you get the idea. I can't tell you how sad that makes me.<br /><br />Her daughter was born a year before I started quilting with any regularity, so I never made her a quilt. It's nine months early! At least that's how I'm choosing to look at it. I started it a week before Thanksgiving, but with three kids under the age of four and an old sewing machine that did *not* like machine applique, I didn't finish the binding until last night. Oh, well. My machine and I are back on speaking terms after a little visit to the repair shop. I used Amanda Jean's <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2010/08/fair-and-square-quilt-pattern.html">Fair and Square pattern</a>, with a few adjustments. I centered the offset rows (way too OCD to handle them not being centered) and made it smaller for a baby quilt (squares finishing at 5", sashing at 2", top and bottom at 3"). I like how bright and cheerful it turned out, and hopefully the new baby will like it as well!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfPz4pgAG1Q192mDS_0EFWSZr9-EGqgVSV8dgZsaezXoJHi7H5H8V1J67OwqUhMVemueg_CfFcvMnGUKD9YgWpP3fyq1-GZ6N_E7yvdXK-i89cLPYpGkt9RlEI7Mcs4YAMR33kSr16YIo/s1600/DSC_3038.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfPz4pgAG1Q192mDS_0EFWSZr9-EGqgVSV8dgZsaezXoJHi7H5H8V1J67OwqUhMVemueg_CfFcvMnGUKD9YgWpP3fyq1-GZ6N_E7yvdXK-i89cLPYpGkt9RlEI7Mcs4YAMR33kSr16YIo/s320/DSC_3038.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546465297988231154" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmW7WFJ9JLiLqOX3hFEfbOiu3I8kL_OkbsNn-3H4XxUTTrAHw8YNouley4le-h_gclOVbufhoHETM36bxvdcoB24IPK59mmk5Wmee5rCudfikiLLdLXf0CiH2QaWkPJnCpjynlq7hUR8Y/s1600/DSC_3041.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmW7WFJ9JLiLqOX3hFEfbOiu3I8kL_OkbsNn-3H4XxUTTrAHw8YNouley4le-h_gclOVbufhoHETM36bxvdcoB24IPK59mmk5Wmee5rCudfikiLLdLXf0CiH2QaWkPJnCpjynlq7hUR8Y/s320/DSC_3041.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546465293279037314" border="0" /></a>Love the one red duck :)<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwNhf7QVL2EO53uxeDAo3_pxnpWXYewcP-ZAklt3H06c9mIg4hT85YLPkh1wq-4g0VrDIpc1MgDIUI9JEGzq6iuYibMrBcF_4RsEwQ9w1E37tMmstyk4iwr2JaH7hA_-i5sQv_UvC6CgI/s1600/DSC_3037.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwNhf7QVL2EO53uxeDAo3_pxnpWXYewcP-ZAklt3H06c9mIg4hT85YLPkh1wq-4g0VrDIpc1MgDIUI9JEGzq6iuYibMrBcF_4RsEwQ9w1E37tMmstyk4iwr2JaH7hA_-i5sQv_UvC6CgI/s320/DSC_3037.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546465277713470962" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinypcJCrCcCKR071jeK6GkdzKMQAAhWvSav0FsmyE8mlQkEKk12NikNDHTQIu9cQ0JsE1Ac4r2F4q0oIRLptkq16ZbKy9gbgO7O2M8vZTeAb6kKuUDiS8FwNFta_Asu-BqncwUz3TxDyk/s1600/DSC_3039.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinypcJCrCcCKR071jeK6GkdzKMQAAhWvSav0FsmyE8mlQkEKk12NikNDHTQIu9cQ0JsE1Ac4r2F4q0oIRLptkq16ZbKy9gbgO7O2M8vZTeAb6kKuUDiS8FwNFta_Asu-BqncwUz3TxDyk/s320/DSC_3039.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546465273338297682" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJgV5xOc-1lKPdTR5kx4STESOBjRF-rDx6sAD2C1zB8vmRpHmId0Azl_olBOnUVBRgQBs40lVL1LNQsDdFpaxPEZFHS5mhKFMpBnQWEHIMc77Wc5kMs_ZQO2f0Q0nqx2tUo5qf9eyViRM/s1600/DSC_3042.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJgV5xOc-1lKPdTR5kx4STESOBjRF-rDx6sAD2C1zB8vmRpHmId0Azl_olBOnUVBRgQBs40lVL1LNQsDdFpaxPEZFHS5mhKFMpBnQWEHIMc77Wc5kMs_ZQO2f0Q0nqx2tUo5qf9eyViRM/s320/DSC_3042.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546465269844647858" border="0" /></a>Go check out all the other lovelies at Sew & Tell Fridays!<br /><a href="http://www.amylouwho.com/search/label/sew-n-tell" target="_blank"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2491/4140008620_26a064ef2d_o.jpg" /></a>Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021202786701277183.post-34031086180826036792010-11-04T14:34:00.000-04:002010-11-05T14:57:11.555-04:00Tallen's QuiltA little over a year ago, I made <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2009/10/quilts.html">this quilt</a> for a newly-arrived friend's newborn daughter. Well, last spring, she and her husband found out a surprise was on its way - another baby! When I told her that I was going to make her a quilt for this baby, she immediately put in a request for <a href="http://brynnsews.blogspot.com/2010/02/finally.html">this quilt</a>. Since figuring out patterns and fabric is a huge chunk of the work for me when making baby quilts, she made my life a little easier. So, here's the new quilt!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL3Nu51RykH7FeWVtGJrXijdms-gDpFCPTAH2AQThaw7GajMlxDEIzwG4hFA3vnXfzD1ltdx3ttLaI2CME3vjdDAItuR9c33xcww0rVotiuZFzvqL5hz2dGj7QME9IM8kHCM6abbbN5AE/s1600/IMG_4858.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL3Nu51RykH7FeWVtGJrXijdms-gDpFCPTAH2AQThaw7GajMlxDEIzwG4hFA3vnXfzD1ltdx3ttLaI2CME3vjdDAItuR9c33xcww0rVotiuZFzvqL5hz2dGj7QME9IM8kHCM6abbbN5AE/s320/IMG_4858.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535768493931231746" border="0" /></a>I love the colors in this quilt - the blues and greens are a little funky.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0KBergUoNj0_t4DOQvaBCNFMU0QVLbTAQIkygDsPC3dIuLZAG-We4-uXalwZdYmryn-kkmsTzjJpqMyDfBAtXj8t2YUMqGj8lFVpRoAdNr7u67HzMEmi5taXbNVSFjYl_JMup6nkOqa8/s1600/IMG_4852.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0KBergUoNj0_t4DOQvaBCNFMU0QVLbTAQIkygDsPC3dIuLZAG-We4-uXalwZdYmryn-kkmsTzjJpqMyDfBAtXj8t2YUMqGj8lFVpRoAdNr7u67HzMEmi5taXbNVSFjYl_JMup6nkOqa8/s320/IMG_4852.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535768474704200898" border="0" /></a>I also love that with all the geometric shapes, colors, and animals, this is definitely a boy's quilt.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYSwBZd0-Hv1_wpqzXn-IkTumyGD3I1MOQD8OnnzguHMA1KI4LlsliIft_-UVmxKhMI6-C6cyDqtXMaJWts0l1yDShXIDHhXmIevIWfgQLKZb1lp3cITM6_Yty0_PNTcFr74Ga16JgXUQ/s1600/IMG_4861.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYSwBZd0-Hv1_wpqzXn-IkTumyGD3I1MOQD8OnnzguHMA1KI4LlsliIft_-UVmxKhMI6-C6cyDqtXMaJWts0l1yDShXIDHhXmIevIWfgQLKZb1lp3cITM6_Yty0_PNTcFr74Ga16JgXUQ/s320/IMG_4861.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535768473032479442" border="0" /></a>In fact, I love it so much that when I cut out the fabric for this quilt, I went ahead and cut enough to make another one for our new little one!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkrpA79C3FcptU5plbgnb60sWcbwZN9o651CfR-s4efp4XzwLjmD3BHTzE6RUefZejINF6HtczYUtV6nBk8tbc7nABL6PIhpLIppBa0pT7G2wuQmQXm04wivmYS8W8XfnLXAvktA8EOkM/s1600/Joshua+%232.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 222px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkrpA79C3FcptU5plbgnb60sWcbwZN9o651CfR-s4efp4XzwLjmD3BHTzE6RUefZejINF6HtczYUtV6nBk8tbc7nABL6PIhpLIppBa0pT7G2wuQmQXm04wivmYS8W8XfnLXAvktA8EOkM/s320/Joshua+%232.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535769113874238530" border="0" /></a>Thanks for visiting, and enjoy looking at all the other lovely quilts at the Blogger's Quilt Festival! <div align="center"><a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/?p=3409" title="Amy's Creative Side - Blogger's Quilt Festival"><img src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/bqf10sm.jpg" alt="Amy's Creative Side - Blogger's Quilt Festival" style="border: medium none;" /></a></div>Also, go check out all the other finishes this week at Sew and Tell Friday!<br /><a href="http://www.amylouwho.com/search/label/sew-n-tell" target="_blank"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2491/4140008620_26a064ef2d_o.jpg" /></a>Brynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10664764498683549553noreply@blogger.com16
